The Complete Guide to Hahndorf Hill Winery

The Complete Guide to Hahndorf Hill Winery

Perched on the slopes above one of Australia's most charming villages, Hahndorf Hill is a boutique Adelaide Hills winery known for its cool-climate fine wines, Austrian grape varieties, and one of the region's most distinctive cellar door experiences. Whether you're planning your first visit or returning for another round of ChocoVino, this guide covers everything you need to know: our story, our wines, what to expect at the cellar door, and how to make the most of a trip to the Adelaide Hills.

Our Story

Hahndorf Hill began with a leap of faith and a deep love for wine. In 1997, South African-born couple Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson arrived in the Adelaide Hills with a vision to create something that hadn't been attempted in Australia: a winery dedicated to Austrian grape varieties. They purchased the property on Pain Road in 2002, drawn to the site's elevated position, its ancient slate soils, and the cool-climate conditions that mirrored the great wine regions of Lower Austria.

Their gamble paid off. Working with vine cuttings imported from Austria, Larry and Marc planted six clones of Gruner Veltliner and went on to produce the first commercially released Gruner Veltliner in South Australia. They followed it with Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, and St. Laurent, building a portfolio unlike any other in the country. Over two decades, they earned critical recognition from Decanter, the Frankfurt International Wine Awards, and James Halliday's Top 100 Australian Wineries list.

In mid-2025, Hahndorf Hill entered a new chapter when the families and management team behind Wirra Wirra and Ashton Hills acquired the property from Larry and Marc. Led by CEO Matthew Deller MW, the new custodianship is broadening the portfolio to include classic cool-climate expressions like Chardonnay and eventually Pinot Noir, while honouring the Austrian heritage that defines the brand.

It is a shift in positioning, from "Home of Gruner Veltliner" to cool-climate fine wine from the Adelaide Hills. But the DNA remains. The vineyard, the cellar door, the commitment to small-batch winemaking, and the Austrian varieties that started it all are very much part of what comes next.

Our Wines

Hahndorf Hill's portfolio sits at the intersection of two traditions: the Austrian varieties that built the winery's reputation, and the classic cool-climate grapes that thrive in the Adelaide Hills.

Gruner Veltliner

Three distinct expressions anchor the range. Gru is the approachable, everyday Gruner Veltliner: crisp, textural, and built for drinking with food. White Mischief pushes into more complexity, with savoury depth and a longer finish. The Reserve Gruner Veltliner is the benchmark, showcasing what this grape can achieve in Australian soil when given the full attention of the winemaker. Together, they represent the broadest range of Gruner Veltliner produced by any single Australian winery.

Austrian Reds

The red side of the Austrian portfolio includes Blaufrankisch, Zweigelt, and St. Laurent. These are medium-bodied, aromatic varieties with fine tannins and bright acidity. They sit beautifully between Pinot Noir and Shiraz in style, and they are among the rarest commercially available reds in Australia.

Cool-Climate Classics

Under the new custodianship, Hahndorf Hill has introduced a Chardonnay to the portfolio. The 2025 vintage is sourced from two premium sites in the Adelaide Hills and fermented in a combination of stainless steel and French oak, producing a wine with citrus blossom, savoury flint, and layers of almond kernel. It sits alongside an established Pinot Grigio (winner of a Royal Queensland Wine Show trophy), a Shiraz, and a Rose.

Whether your preference runs to the textural whites, the aromatic reds, or the new cool-climate releases, you can explore the full range online at the Hahndorf Hill shop or in person at the cellar door.

What Is Gruner Veltliner?

If you haven't encountered Gruner Veltliner before, you're in good company. It's Austria's signature white grape, the most widely planted variety in the country, and one of the world's great food wines. Yet in Australia, it remains relatively uncommon.

What makes it distinctive is its texture. Where Sauvignon Blanc cuts with acidity and Chardonnay builds with richness, Gruner Veltliner sits between them: savoury, mineral, and textured, with a peppery finish that sets it apart from any other white variety. It pairs naturally with Asian cuisine, seafood, fresh salads, and anything with herbs or spice.

The grape thrives in cool climates with significant day-to-night temperature variation, which is exactly what the Adelaide Hills provides. Warm days ripen the fruit, cold nights preserve natural acidity, and the ancient slate soils at Hahndorf Hill add a mineral complexity that you can taste in the glass. Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson recognised this potential when they imported six clones from Austria and planted them on the property in the early 2000s, laying the foundation for what has become Australia's most recognised Gruner Veltliner program.

Cellar Door Experiences

The cellar door at Hahndorf Hill is one of the most rewarding stops in the Adelaide Hills. Set on the first floor of the winery building, the tasting room opens onto a viewpoint balcony overlooking the vineyard and the rolling hills beyond. On a clear day, the outlook stretches across the valley, making it one of the finest vantage points of any cellar door in the region.

Visitors can drop in for a guided wine tasting, where staff walk you through a curated flight of current releases. Wine flights can be paired with a locally sourced cheese plate, and there is space to linger over a glass by the fireplace or on the enclosed balcony. For groups of 9 to 30 guests, dedicated group experiences can be arranged in advance.

Opening hours: Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm. Sunday and some public holidays, 11am to 5pm.  Please check our ‘Visit Us’ page to confirm.

Weekday visits tend to be quieter, with more opportunity for conversation with the cellar door team. If you are visiting on a weekend or during peak periods (Easter is the busiest time of year), booking ahead is strongly recommended.

The ChocoVino Experience

ChocoVino is Hahndorf Hill's signature wine and chocolate pairing, and it has become one of the most talked-about cellar door experiences in South Australia. It is not a standard chocolate tasting. Each chocolate is crafted by a local chocolatier specifically to complement a wine from the Hahndorf Hill range, guided by shared flavour compounds and terroir principles.

The experience runs for approximately 45-60 minutes and is guided by a member of the cellar door team who explains the logic behind each pairing. It has received international recognition, including features in CNN Travel and Qantas Magazine, and consistently ranks among the top-rated activities in Hahndorf on visitor review platforms.

ChocoVino is available for individuals and groups, with the group rate starting at $32 per person. Bookings are essential, particularly on weekends and during school holidays. A nut allergy option is available on request. You can book ChocoVino here.

The Vineyard

Hahndorf Hill's six-hectare vineyard occupies a former slate quarry site on the slopes above Hahndorf village. The soils are a patchwork of sandy loam and red clay over blue-red slate, quartz, and ironstone. It is the kind of geological complexity that winemakers spend careers searching for.

The site's elevation and aspect are critical to the style of wine produced here. Sitting within one of the cooler pockets of the Adelaide Hills, the vineyard benefits from warm daytime temperatures that ripen fruit fully, followed by sharp drops overnight that lock in natural acidity. The result is wines with freshness, balance, and detail: hallmarks of cool-climate winemaking at its best.

Winemaker Kelly Wellingtonjoined in 2025 with nearly two decades of cool-climate winemaking experience with her career spanning the Adelaide Hills, Yarra Valley and the Grampians.

Her approach emphasises place and precision, letting the fruit and the site speak rather than masking them with heavy winemaking intervention. Jose Neves oversees viticulture across the property, managing both owned and leased vineyard sites with a hands-on philosophy focused on site quality above all else.

Planning Your Visit

Getting Here

Hahndorf Hill is located at 38 Pain Road, Hahndorf, South Australia 5245. The winery is approximately 30 minutes from Adelaide CBD via the South Eastern Freeway. Take the Hahndorf exit and follow the signs toward the village. Pain Road is a short drive from the main street.

If you prefer not to drive, the 864 bus runs from Stirling to Hahndorf and stops in the village centre, from where the winery is a manageable walk uphill. Uber and rideshare services operate in the Hills, though availability can be limited outside peak times. Taxi services are another option for the return trip if you plan on tasting.

Free parking is available on site.

For those booking a wine tour, several Adelaide Hills tour operators include Hahndorf Hill on their itineraries. A guided wine tour is a good option if you want to visit multiple cellar doors in a single day without worrying about transport.

When to Visit

The Adelaide Hills are beautiful year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you are after. Autumn (March to May) brings harvest season, golden vineyard colours, and mild weather. Spring (September to November) is when the vines come alive and the Hills are lush and green. Summer weekends are busy, and winter can be brisk, but the cellar door is warm, and a glass of Blaufrankisch by the fireplace has its own appeal.

The cellar door is open seven days a week: Monday to Saturday from 10am, and Sunday from 11am. If you are visiting specifically for ChocoVino, book in advance, especially on weekends and public holiday periods. Weekday mornings are the quietest time if you prefer a more relaxed experience.

Combining with Other Hahndorf Attractions

Hahndorf is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, and the village itself is worth an afternoon of exploring. The main street is lined with independent shops, bakeries, and cafes, and there are several other cellar doors within walking distance of the village centre.

Nearby wineries worth visiting include those listed on the Adelaide Hills Wine Region directory. Beyond wine, Beerenberg Farm is a short drive away for tastings and farm shop browsing, The Cedars (home of artist Hans Heysen) offers a cultural detour, and Ambleside Distillers produces excellent small-batch spirits.

A strong day trip itinerary from Adelaide: start at Hahndorf Hill mid-morning for a wine tasting or ChocoVino, walk down to the village for lunch, explore the main street in the afternoon, and finish with a visit to one of the neighbouring cellar doors before heading home. If you have a full day, extend the route to include stops at two or three other Adelaide Hills wineries along the way.
