SOIL & SOUL

A sense of place,
a spirit of evolution

Perched above the historic village of Hahndorf, Hahndorf Hill is a boutique producer dedicated to crafting fine wines that reflect the beauty and nuance of the Adelaide Hills. Our philosophy is rooted in respect for site, balance and detail, creating wines that capture the cool-climate elegance for which this region is renowned.

Our History

In 2002, Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson purchased Hahndorf Hill and set about shaping its reputation for innovation and excellence. Their vision introduced Austrian grape varieties, including Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt, to Australian soil, establishing Hahndorf Hill as a distinctive voice in the Adelaide Hills. Over two decades, they nurtured the vineyards and crafted wines that spoke of both place and creativity.

Today, Hahndorf Hill continues that spirit of innovation with a renewed focus on the broader fine wine landscape of the Adelaide Hills. While Grüner Veltliner remains a cornerstone of our portfolio, we’re equally inspired by the region’s hallmark varieties - Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and other cool-climate expressions that showcase purity, texture and finesse.

This next chapter builds on strong foundations: the same respect for craftsmanship and the same dedication to making wines that speak clearly of where they come
from.

"Hahndorf Hill writes the book on Gruner Veltliner, using sophisticated winemaking techniques to do so. The result is unfailing value."

Focus on
Gruner Veltliner

Gruner Veltliner is a noble white grape, native to Austria, celebrated for its texture, savouriness, and remarkable versatility. At Hahndorf Hill, it thrives in the cool-climate conditions of the Adelaide Hills, producing wines that are simultaneously vibrant, elegant, and age-worthy.

Our vineyards benefit from warm days and cold nights, a significant diurnal range that mirrors the grape’s Austrian origins. This slow, even ripening fosters wines that are both opulent and lively, with a tension between freshness and depth that defines our Gruner Veltliner.

Hahndorf Hill produces four distinct Gruner Veltliner expressions:

  • Gru Gruner Veltliner: Classic, precise and varietally true.
  • White Mischief: A vibrant, New World style highlighting aromatic and fruit expression.
  • Reserve Gruner Veltliner: Rich, layered and complex, inspired by Austria’s Wachau and Kamptal regions.
  • Green Angel Late Harvest: Balanced dessert wine, showcasing natural acidity and spice.

A history
of acclaim

Across more than 15 vintages, our Gruner Veltliner has established a benchmark for the variety in Australia, recognised by leading wine shows including Decanter, Frankfurt International and London Wine Awards, and honoured with multiple appearances in James Halliday’s Top 100 Wines.
