SOIL & SOUL
Our Vineyard
Our six-hectare vineyard rests on the gentle slopes above historic Hahndorf. Mineral-rich soils - sandy loam, red clay, slate, quartz and ironstone - give our wines subtle texture and a distinctive sense of place.
Our wines are meticulously handcrafted, and this work begins in the vineyard. Throughout the growing season there is a consistent focus on quality, from detailed hand pruning in winter, to shoot thinning in spring, followed by yield management, bird netting and finally handpicking.
A unique site within Australia, our vineyard is an Adelaide Hills expression of the classic Austrian varieties Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, St Laurent and Trollinger.
We also grow a small parcel of 12 interplanted varieties that make up our Field Blend, which is an expression of the Austrian-style Gemischter Satz.
Cool-climate conditions
Mild days and cool nights result in a long and slow growing season, allowing for steady flavour development, balance and fruit concentration.
The diurnal variation is a significant quality driver as the grapes build flavour throughout the day, yet retain acidity overnight.
The Austrian varieties, Grüner Veltliner, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt, are particularly suited to this site and these conditions.
Sustainability and Resilience
We take a regenerative farming approach, with care and commitment to sustainability and resilience.
Our vineyards are certified under Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA), with a focus on soil health, soil carbon and resilience in a changing climate.
This approach to management produces wines of vitality and finesse while protecting the unique Adelaide Hills environment.
Purity and Expression
From soil to vine, every element of the vineyard shapes wines that are expressive, balanced and unmistakably of the Adelaide Hills.
